1 – Was Founded as a Divisional Point of the Great Northern Railway
Hanna owes its name to the president of the Great Northern Railway and prominent industrialist at the time of its founding, David Blythe Hanna. Operating as a service town for much of East Central Alberta, Hanna offered farmers and ranchers banking and other professional services.
At the time and for much of its original growing period, Hanna was home to merchants, tradesmen, professionals, and railroaders who came together to create a vibrant and diverse community. With huge influxes of American settlers from the Dakotas, Hanna has a history that can be followed back across much of North America. There is a wealth of history when you come right down to it. 2 – Hanna is the Headquarters for the Special Areas Administration
Because of its location and its history, Hanna has become a central hub for a variety of services, including the Special Areas Administration. This organization was founded to offer municipal government oversight for the low-population density areas, as much as 5,000,000 acres in East Central Alberta.
Hanna has long been a nexus point for development and governing, with a prime location that is centralized enough without also being remote, it has become an important hub for the area. Aside from its responsibilities for the Special Areas Administration, Hanna is also the headquarters for the Palliser Regional Planning Commission which determines and organizes improvement and advisory services for the area.
3 – Hometown of the Rock Band Nickleback
One of Canada’s most recognizable bands is from Hanna, Alberta. Chad Robert Turton, otherwise known as Chad Kroeger, lead vocalist and guitarist, and the band have earned Hanna recognition across Canada. He’s not the only member from the quaint Alberta town either. Members of his family, including still-present member Mike Kroeger and Brandon Kroeger, who was part of the band for 2 years, also call Hanna home. Ryan Peake, the guitar player and keyboardist was also born in Hanna.
4 – Step through time in Hanna’s Pioneer Village & Museum
Walk through the past in one of the best kept pioneer villages in Alberta. Located on Pioneer Trail, the historic block offers visitors the opportunity to wander through a variety of buildings decorated with time-accurate antiques and artefacts. Noted as having hundreds of thousands of interesting pieces on display, the visit can be completed with a knowledgeable tour guide, offering information relevant to the lives of the people who helped make Hanna what it is today.
